Rainforest you can "COUNT" on
Grade level:  Grades 1-2

Subject: Math, Langage Arts

Learner outcomes:
                                Students will be able to write story problems.
                                Students will be able to solve math problems.

Duration of lesson: Two 45-minute sessions

Materials:

Technology Tools/Courseware: Microsoft Word  or any word processor, Calculators (optional)

Teacher notes: Try to purchase rain forest animal stickers before beginning.  The students can use the stickers instead of cutting out from clip art. This will save time and the students will be excited about the stickers.

Procedure:  1) The  students will pick animals of the rainforest to write story problems about.
                   2) Using Microsoft Word  to draw a table consisting of four squares to fit the page.
                   3) Label the table "Counting Rainforest Animals."   The teacher or the students will type a rainforest word problem in each square.
                  4) Make copies for all students.   Distribute to students.
                  5) The  students will illustrate each problem using stickers or clip art.   Example: There are four leopards hiding in the grass, three more join them.  How many leopards are hiding in the grass?

Modifications: Students could work in teams to assist each other with understanding.

Enrichment activities:  Students may draw the animals for their math problems.
                                   Students may act out the math problem pretending to be certain animals.
 

Evaluation/Assessment: Students will be graded on active participation.  The math sheets will be graded.  Students will be evaluated for understanding.  Review and reteach will be utilized, if necessary.  Complete checklist for each child.
