or Not To Be-Lesson One

Learner Outcomes:
The students will
understand reasons for setting goals and will write goals for themselves.
The student will
understand significance of innate talents and why the past affects the
future.
The student will
recognize importance of being involved in school and community activities.
The student will
be made aware of college requirements, costs, and other vital information.
The student will
be made aware of trends, salaries, opportunities, and requirements in the
job market.
Time Frame: Four (45 minute) class periods
Materials: Pen, pencil, paper
Technology Tools/Courseware: PowerPoint software, projector or television with VCR, laptop computer
Teacher Notes:
Music in PowerPoint
outline presentation may be played in entirety, stopped after a few seconds,
or ignored.
Give guest speaker a copy of overview several weeks ahead of time and explain purpose of the unit.
Procedures:
The teacher will
present an overview of the unit using a PowerPoint
presentation , which explains to students the
learner outcomes and the components of the project.
The students will take notes and write any questions they may have about the unit.
The teacher will answer students' questions.
A guest speaker, such as a local business person, will reinforce teacher's overview with a discussion of the topics covered.
Students will ask questions of the speaker and then write a one page response to what they have learned.
Students will write a thank you note to the guest speaker.
Following an explanation and class discussion of setting goals, students will complete a worksheet on which they list their own primary goal and the secondary goals needed to reach that goal.
After viewing a PowerPoint presentation model, students will complete an outline for the four-part paper, which will be the final product.
Modifications:
Lessons will be modified according to individual IEP's.
Enrichment:
Students will read biographies and autobiographies. A website with many stories is gutenberg.
