Subject (s): Health, Science & Language Arts
Learner Outcomes: Each
student should be able to:
1. explain what precautions they can take to protect themselves from
contracting HIV.
2. discuss the reasons we need to show compassion for people infected
with HIV.
3. use a word processor in perparing a journal.
Duration of Lesson: Two hour
Materials: Mini
lecture
Video
"The Ryan White Story"
Technology Tools/Courseware:
Computer hooked to internet, a slide maker program
(Presentation or
Power Point)
Teacher Notes:
Some things we might do on a daily bases that we shouldn't do are:
1. sharing razors
2. sharing needles
3. body piercing where the proper ways to clean equipment are not
practiced - Make
sure they have an autoclave, a sterilizer regulated by the U.S. Food &
Drug
Administration. It should
also have an ultrasonic cleaner.
4. tattooing - same as number 3
5. don't share toothbrushes
Using common sense and following safety precautions we shouldn't be in
any danger
of contracting
HIV.
At school, if someone injures themselves and bleeds or they have a nosebleed,
give
them the material
they need (tissues, paper towels, Band-Aids, etc.) and let them take
care of it. The
teacher can help if he or she is wearing latex rubber gloves.
HIV can be spread only in very specific ways. If we aren't involved
in these behaviors
we will remain
free from HIV.
We need to show compassion to anyone infected with HIV. We are potentially
much
more dangerous
to them than they are to us. If we have any germs, they get them
and if
their immune
system is weak enough, they can get sick or die.
We need to treat them as normally as possible. They need friends
and they need to do
all the things
healthy 6th and or 7th graders do.
Modifications: If
a computer is available a slide show can be made instead of a lecture.
If there is no
computer, the chalkboard should be used.
Enrichment Activities:
Using what they have learned in the mini lecture and
from watching "The
Ryan White
Story", have the students write a five hundred word paper on
compassion for
people who are HIV positive or have AIDS. Also, the
Ryan White book could be
purchased for the classroom and used as a tool
for fighting prejudice.
