Lesson 1 - Being Responsible for Your Safety

 Grade Level:  Grade 3 

Subjects:  Health, Science, Language Arts running

Learner Outcomes:
    1.) The student will recognize that there are people who are responsible for keeping children safe. 
    2.) The student will develop safety rules. 

Duration of Lesson:  1 - 30 minute class period 

Materials:
    1.) Graphic organizer
    2.) Paper 
    3.) Crayons and markers 

Technology Tools/Courseware:
    1.) Overhead projector 
    2.) Screen 
    3.) Paint program on MS Word 

Teacher Notes:

Procedures:
    1.) Brainstorming activity "Who is responsible for your safety?"  Place student ideas on board. 
    2.) Using the overhead projector, generate and discuss graphic organizer showing basic safety rules that prevent injury. 
    3.) Closure activity. 

Modifications:
    Lesson may be adapted to meet the IEP or 504 plans of included students. 

Enrichment Activities:
    Students may create a drawing depicting  "Me as a Responsible person."  He/she will show how he/she takes responsibility for their safety.  They will use paper/crayons/markers or use a paint program on their computers. 
    Display all efforts in the classroom.

    Teacher observation of student participation.
