Lesson 2 - Safety Around Strangers and Bullies

Grade Level:  Grade 3 sneak

Learner Outcomes: 
    1.) Student will describe how to remain safe around strangers. 
    2.) Student will explain how to avoid conflicts and methods for "getting along with" bullies. 

Duration of Lesson:  1 - 30 minute class period 

Materials: 
    Poster board and markers 

Technology Tools/Courseware: 
    1.)Computers with Internet access 
    2.) Overhead projector 

Teacher Notes: 
     Review conflict resolution skills and steps for negotiation. 

Procedures: 
    1.) Post the Four Safety Rules about Strangers and discuss. 
    2.) Elicit other safety rules about strangers and list them using the overhead projector.   Some examples may be:
    3.) Use the McGruff the Crime Dog web site.  Use this site students will make a list of safety rules for facing a bully. 

Modifications: 
    Teacher may modify the plan to meet the needs of IEPs and 504 plans. 

Enrichment activities: 
    Read marerial on comics part of McGruff  web site

Evaluation/Assessment: 
    In groups of 4 students will act out conflicts with bullies and ways to work things out to help them get along better.
