Lesson 4 - Bicycling Safety

Learner Outcomes:
    1.) Student will identify safety gear. 
    2.) Student will explain safety rules for bicycling. 

Duration of lesson:  1 - 30 minute class period. 

Materials: 
    Bicycle helmets in various sizes 
    Knee pads 
    wrist guards 

Technology Tools/Courseware:
     Transparancy and markers 
    Overhead projector 
    Computers with Internet access 
    Printer 

Teacher Notes:
    Vocabulary:  safety gear, helmet 
    Modify this lesson to meet the needs of students with IEPs and 504 plans. 
 

Procedures:
    1.) Students will brainstorm the safety gear needed when riding a bicycle.  Place ideas on transparancy and use overhead.  Discuss the importance of each item.  (Examples may be: helmet, knee pads, wrist guards,etc.) 
    2.) Students will visit web site and locate bicycle safety rules .  Students will print out rules to take home.  Teacher will orally review these rules with students. 
    3..)Students will make a bicycle safety rules mural. 
        Have groups of 4 students draw the mural illustrating the bicycle safety rules. 
   4..) Have the class play the "Can you Find It ?" game. Students state their safety rule and other students attempt to locate the rule on the mural (s). 

Modifications:
    Modify to meet the specific needs of students with IEPs and 504 plans. 

Enrichment Activities:
    Continue to seach the WEB at home and report findings to class.
