Lesson 5 - Getting Help and Giving First Aid

 Grade Level:  Grade 3 

Subjects:
    Health 
    Social Studies 
    Language Art 

Learner Outcomes:
    1.) The student will demonstrate how to get emergency assistance when someone has been injured. 
    2.) The student will describe first aid for cuts, scrapes, insect bites, and stings. 

Duration of Lesson:  2 - 30 minute class periods 

Materials:
    Chart paper 
    markers 
    first aid products such as gauze, ace bandages,etc. 

Technology Tools/Courseware:
    computers with Internet access 

Teacher Notes:
    Vocabulary:  first aid 
    Teacher may modify to meet the needs of students with IEPs and 504 plans. 

Procedure:
    1.)Share this poem with students.  Discuss 
    2.) Have students go to First Aid for Kids.  (This site provides step-by-step instruction for treating common injuries.)  After looking at the site the students should then get with partners and Think-Pair-Share.  After T-P-S students will discuss orally. 
    3.) Guest speaker from county 911 Center will visit with class. 
    4.) After guest speaker have students create a chart of what to do in an emergency . Students may work individually or in teams. 
    5.) Closure activity 

Modifications:
    Teacher may modify plan to meet the needs of students with IEPs or 504 plans. 

Enrichment Activities:
    Use activity located at P E Central.   Students are simply to follow the activity directions.   Students may bring the results to school for teacher feedback. 

Evaluation/Assessment:
    Teacher Observation.  Have students work in pairs to role-play making a emergency call to 911.Make sure they include all important information the operator will need to direct emengency personnel to their homes.  Also, make sure they stay on the line UNTIL told to hang-up.
