Learner Outcomes:  The student will:

• Work effectively in a group.
• Create an original children's storybook.
• Determine appropriate age level for the original work.
• Use a word processing program and graphics.
• Make a presentation to the class.
• Evaluate an original work using a checklist.

Materials:  Checklist for each student, art supplies (optional)

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Computers with printers and word processing program, Graphics disks

Teacher Notes:  Artistically talented students may wish to illustrate their book with handmade drawings.
Allow time for discussion after each presentation.

Procedures:

• As a whole group brainstorm ideas for a children's storybook.
• Discuss age appropriateness of material.
• Break into their groups of four and choose a topic about which to write.
• Write a rough draft, using a word processing program..
• Proofread and edit the text electronically.
• As a group decide what illustrations are needed and where.
• Decide on handmade or electronic graphics, or a combination of these.
• Add the illustrations.
• Present the storybook to the class.
• Evaluate the works of the other groups.

Enrichment Activities:  Students could write and produce a stage adaptation of their storybook.  Students could write musical accompaniment for their storybook.

Evaluation/Assessment:  4 point rubric for finished storybook and presentation
