their BMI manually and compare it to their internet calculations.

factors which are involved in measuring body fat.

to find their ideal
weight .

Students will keep an electronic
portfolio using Microsoft Word throughout the unit and BMI
chart to calculate information they have obtained and create a bar
graph of their final results.

The Presidential Physical
Fitness test will be used as pre and posttest for this unit.

This unit should begin early
in the school year to assess results and continued through out the school
year.

Pair children carefully with
a partner.
-
Make sure students know this
is only one way to measure body fat.
-
The electronic portfolio may
contain worksheets completed in Word, handwritten activities, and journal
entries.
Procedures:
-
In a large group have students
discuss what BMI may mean to them.
-
Have students go to Self.com
to find the definition of BMI (click on body mass) and why this is important
to their health.
-
Discuss with students that
this is only one way to measure body fat in a person.
-
In groups of two, have students
measure their weight and height. This will be put in their electronic portfolios.
They will use this chart throughout the year (at
least 4 times) to measure their BMI.

After students get their heights
and weights have them manually calculate their BMI using the Weight/Height
formula they will find on their chart.
-
After they manually calculate
their BMI, have students go to calculate Your
Body-Mass web site.
-
On this site, students will
scroll down to BMI calculator. They will add their height and weight
to the chart. Students will go to calculate, click on that and their
BMI will come up on the screen.

Have students compare the
BMI they did manually to the one that they did on the web site.
-
Have students write down their
BMI percentage on their chart.
-
Discuss orally with students
that this is only one way to determine body fat percentages in their bodies.
They may explore other
factors that may be involved including their personal health problems.

Students may want to look
at the the Ideal
Weight Chart and compare their weight to this chart.
-
Students will write in their
electronic journals daily. They may want to include ways they would like
to change their lifestyle and goals they may want to achieve.

At the end of the school year
students will enter their data from their chart
into Excel and create
bar
graphs of their progress.

Make any adjustments for students
who have special needs according to their IEP's

Activities:
-
Have each student to set a
long-term goal at the beginning of the school year. This may include
a plan to exercise more, eat healthier, look at sleep habits, weight and
stress management skills.
