Title: Nutrition Mission

Grade Level(s):   5-6 

Subject(s): Health, Language Arts, and Math

Learner Outcomes: 

  • Students will go to a web site to gather information about the basic food groups.
  • Students will convert their height to centimeters and weight to kilograms.
  • Students will write what they ate for each meal to determine the number of calories consumed for that day.
  • Students will go to The Food Guide Pyramid to review/learn the basic food groups and gather information.
  • Students will keep an electronic portfolio on Microsoft Word throughout the unit.
Duration: 4 lessons @ 30 minutes each 

Materials:

  • Each student will need the Food Guide Pyramid worksheet.
  • Each student will need the I Am What I Eat worksheet.
Technology Tools/Courseware: Teacher Notes: Procedures:
  • The teacher will lead a discussion on eating healthy and review/introduce The Food Guide Pyramid. 
  • The students will give examples of the foods found in each of the five food groups .
  • The teacher will lead a discussion on the recommended daily servings  for each of the food groups.
  • Students will go to The Food Guide Pyramid to locate answers to the questions on the worksheet. 
  • The teacher will have the students discuss the answers to the questions on the worksheet. 
  • Students will use their heights and weights worksheet (from Lesson 1 ). They will convert their heights from inches to centimeters and their weights from pounds to kilograms electronically using Health Calculators .
  • Students will use their metric conversions to find their daily average calorie needs electronically on  Science Made Simple .
  • Students will write on the worksheet (I Am What I Eat) what they ate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Students will use  Food Buddy to electronically calculate the number of calories eaten that day.
  • Students will compare their daily average calorie needs to their actual calorie intake for a day.  They can decide whether they need to eat more or less calories to maintain their ideal weight.
  • Students will make a healthy treat to eat.
  • Students will continue with their electronic portfolio on a daily basis on Microsoft Word. 
Modifications:
  • All written text will be read to any student receiving special services or on a 504 plan as needed.
  • Students may work with a peer as stated in their IEP.
Enrichment Activities:
  • Students will play a memory game concerning the five food groups called Food Pyramid Match-Up. 
  • Students will play a game concerning eating healthy foods called Dole 5 a Day. 
  • Students may want to visit the Food Finder to find out the amount of fat in many common fast food restaurant items.
  • Students may visit Kidshealth.org find more healthy recipes. 
Evaluation/Assessment:
  • Students will complete the worksheet , A Food Guide Pyramid.
  • Presidential Physical Fitness pre and post test
  • Students will complete the worksheet , I Am What I Eat.
  • Students will complete journal entries on a daily basis. (A rubric will be used to grade all journal entries and other worksheets in their electronic portfolios at the completion of the unit.
  • Presidential Physical Fitness pre and posttests.
