Gather food labels ahead of
time of the game.

Teacher should preview all
links so that they are familiar with them.

Gather student results from
the pretest for the Presidential
Physical Fitness Test
Procedures:
-
Introduce students to the
importance of exercise by having them go to Brain
POP!, clicking on "Health Movies", and choosing the "Fitness" video
to watch.
-
After watching the video,
have students choose to take the quiz on Brain PoP! for fitness.
-
Students can learn more about
the importance of exercise through the Kids
Health site and answer the questions on the worksheet.
-
Preview the requirements
for the Presidential
Physical Fitness Test.

Students will determine their
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) using the directions on the handout
.
-
Students will use the information
from lesson 2 (what they've eaten for a day,
total amount of calories in what they've eaten, and their daily average
calorie need).
-
Have students write down a
list of all their activities during a typical day on the "Calories
Burned!" handout. All activities should be included such as sleeping,
studying, riding bike, standing, etc.
-
Students will take the information
from their activities chart and enter it into the Burning
off Fat web site to determine the total amount of calories burned.
Have students enter this number on their "Calories Burned!' handout.

Students will compare their
calories burned figure with their daily average calorie needed, daily calories
consumed, and basal metabolic rate.
-
Students will play the "Burn
Baby Burn!" game while wearing pedometer
to collect data such as calories burned.
-
Discuss how all all the information
collected throughout the lesson is related to weight loss and weight gain.
Lead them through a discussion using these questions as guidelines:
Are you getting enough exercise? Are you eating from all food groups for
proper nutrition? Are you eating enough? Too much?, etc.
Modifications:

Students may work in pairs
to assist students with IEPs or 504s.

Students
may explore Diet,
Nutrition, and Exercise Center for more information on exercise and
other health links.

Students may use their pedometers
and gather additional information such as distance, time, etc.
