Title: Sleep! ZZZZzzzzz!

Grade Level(s):   5-6 

Subject(s): Health, Language Arts, and Math

Learner Outcomes: 

  • The student will define sleep, REM (rapid eye movement), and NREM (non-rapid eye movement).
  • The student will recognize the importance of sleep.
  • The student will identify the stages of the sleep cycle.
  • The student will calculate the total number of hours he/she sleeps per night for a week.
  • The student will find the percentage of the day he/she sleeps and the average amount of sleep he/she gets per night.
  • The student will illustrate a dream using the information he/she recorded on the Sleep/Dream Journal.
  • The student will continue his/her electronic portfolio used during this unit.
Duration: 5-6 lessons @ 30 minutes each

Materials:

Technology Tools/Courseware: Teacher Notes: Procedures:
  • The teacher will introduce sleep using the Brain Pop Health sleep movie and quiz.
  • The teacher will lead a large group discussion on the sleep movie and quiz.
  • The students will go to the Kidshealth site to read facts about sleep and gather information to complete a worksheet.
  • The teacher  and students will discuss the answers to the questions on the worksheet.
  • The students will begin completing their Sleep/Dream Journals.  (The journal will be used for seven consecutive days.)
  • The students will record the number of hours they sleep nightly and calculate the percentage of the day  they spent sleeping.
  • The students will record any dreams they have had during the week at the bottom of the Sleep/Dream Journal.
  • The students will use Microsoft Paint to illustrate one of their dreams and write a brief description of the dream.
  • The students will continue with their electronic portfolio on a daily basis with Microsoft Word.  (The students can record their answers to the Teen Sleep worksheet on Microsoft Word.)
Modifications:
  • All written text will be read to any student receiving special services or on a 504 plan as needed.
  • Students may work with a peer as stated in their IEP.
