Stress Alert!
Title: Stress Alert!
Grade Level(s): 5-6

Learner Outcomes:
- Students will be able
to recognize causes of stress.
- Students will develop
and practice skills to control their stress level.
- Students will keep a
record of various causes of stress during the school day.
- Students will be able
to connect the change of skin temperature to the amount of stress they experience.
- Students will create
a line graph indicating stress levels throughout the day.
- Students will continue
their electronic portfolios and journals.
Duration of Lesson: 3-4 lessons @ 30 minutes each
Materials:
Technology Tools/Courseware:
- Multi-media computer with
internet connection
- Microsoft Office (Word,
Excel)
- Data Projector
Teacher Notes:
- Teacher may go to the
Office tutorial
site for support.
- Stress
dots should be be ordered ahead of time.
- Teacher should preview
all links so that they are familiar with them.
Procedures:
- Introduce students to
stress and how to manage it through the Wholistic
Stress Control Institute web site.
- Students should include
answers to the following questions in their electronic portfolio:
- What is stress?
- List at least 3 things
that are stressors.
- Give examples of at least
2 things that are stressors for you.
- List at least 4 signs
of stress.
- List 5 ways to handle
stress.
- Is too much stress bad?
- Using a data projector,
introduce how stress
dots work using OnlineOrganizing.com
and clicking on "instructions for use".
- Give each student a stress
dot to apply to the back of their hand.
- Have students establish
a baseline skin temperature by reading the dot and comparing it to the color-code
chart or wall chart.
- Students will watch the
effect on their skin temperature during normal act ivies such as eating,
studying, worrying about a test, physical activities, etc.
- Students will record
their color changes on their "Stress Alert"
activity sheet.
- Students will also record
their level of stress/anxiety on a scale of 1-10 on the same sheet.
- Students should recognize
color changes as related to stress level.
- Students will record
their stress level data from the "Stress Alert" worksheet into Microsoft Excel (click
on Activity sheet for an example) and create
a line graph of their daily stress levels.
- Discuss the correlation
of stress dot color with their various levels of stress.
Modifications:
- Students may work in pairs
to assist students with IEPs or 504s.
Enrichment Activities:
- Students
may explore Kidshealth.org
for more information on stress.
- Students may explore explore the relationship of heart rate
to stress level.
