Web Words
Grade Level: 3rd and 4th

clothespins (1 per child)

Teacher Notes:

Each student will need 20-25 colored index cards.

Inspiration Software
may need to be downloaded prior to lesson.
Procedures: Session 1
-
Inspiration Software can be used with the students as a brainstorming activity.
As students share spider related words, the teacher will type them in to
create a word web. This will be projected onto a TV for all students
to see.

The teacher will draw a large spider web on a large sheet of chart paper
or on a bulletin board.
-
Write the word SPIDERS in the center of the web.
-
Ask the students to brainstorm a list of words that may relate to spiders.
This will assess their prior knowledge.

Visit spider
sites on internet to view spiders. Teacher will show via
a large screen TV. More words may then be added to web.
-
Select vocabulary words from student generated list and teacher list of
spider words.
-
Write each word on an index card and add to web.
-
Have each child make a set of cards from all of the words on the web.
Use a clothespin to keep the cards together. These cards will be
used in the Session 2 activities.
Procedures: Session 2
The students will use their spider word cards to do several sorting
activities.
A. Find
all of the words that are spider body parts.
B. Find
all of the words that are nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
C. Find
all of the words that are one, two, or three syllables.
D. Alphabetize
the set of cards.
E. Select
3 or 4 words which can be used in a sentence about spiders. The student
will write their sentence on a sentence strip. Use colored
markers to underline or circle the spider words. The students should
display their sentence strips around the room.
Modifications:
-
The sorting activities can be done independently or in pairs.
-
Time limits can be given for each sorting activity.
-
The teacher can use web cards from chart to model the correct sorting.
Procedures: Session 3
-
The student will access Puzzlemaker.
-
Select criss-cross puzzle.
-
The student will select a set of words from the spider web chart.
(The teacher may set a minimum.)
-
Follow the on screen directions for creating a cross word puzzle.
The student will enter the selected words and clues as to the meaning of
each word.
-
When all words/clues are typed in, select Create the puzzle.
-
Each student should print 2 copies. The student should complete one
of the puzzles for an answer sheet.

Allow students to exchange puzzles and solve.
Modifications:
-
The puzzles can be laminated and made into a puzzle book of spider facts.
Wipe off markers can be used.
-
The students may work in pairs or work independently.
Evaluations/Assessment:
-
Sentence strips will be informally checked for capital letters, punctuation,
and sentence structure.

Sorting activities will be self checked.
-
The teacher will check off each student when he/she turns in a completed
puzzle.
