Notes:

Students should keep a
reading
biography journal prior to this lesson.

Teacher should make a
copy of the "What a Character" worksheet and
rubric
assessment for each student.

Students should be familiar
with Kid Pix Deluxe; if not, students should be given three or four
opportunities to explore the program prior to lesson.
-
Teacher will have introduced
electronic encyclopedia CD-Rom software and how to copy and paste onto
a blank document.
Procedures:

Students or teacher will
select the biography to be written
about.

Discuss the meaning of
"character traits".
-
Identify facts from biography
that support these thoughts.
-
Complete the "What
a Character" worksheet.
-
Assess using
scoring
rubric.
-
Have students edit their
descriptions.
Computer Lab time:
-
Find picture of character
in electronic encyclopedia.
-
Use Kid Pix or HyperStudio
to create the characterization.
-
Insert picture of character
from electronic encyclopedia.
-
Print out each final description
page and create a classroom book or place all final pictures into a slideshow.
Modifications:

Reading students will
assist non-readers in dictation.

Peer tutors will aid non-readers
in computer lab.
