Language Arts
Learner Outcomes: Students will create a poem using Acrostic
and notes from their biography journals.Duration of Lesson: 30 minute class period
Materials: Acrostic poem format, transparency of Acrostic
examples, biography reading journalsTechnology Tools/Courseware: Overhead projector, Kid Pix CD-Rom,
Multi-media computer; data projectorTeacher Notes:

- Make a transparency template for poetry format if using an overhead.
- Prior to lesson, set up the overhead projector or data projector.
- Students will have read a biography of their choice.
- Students will need to have biography reading journals for notes.
- Review Acrostic website prior to class and bookmark if using data projector. Or print out copies of some of the examples from the website and make transparencies.
- If only one or a few computers are available in your classroom, prepare a schedule for student use.
- Have Kid Pix CD program installed or on discs for each computer.
Procedures:
1. Using the overhead transparency or the introduce the Acrostic format for poem to be
written.
2. Give examples of Acrostic poems using format introduced. [Go to Acrostic Website
bookmarked prior to lesson.]
3. Review data from reading biography journals.
4. Using Kid Pix software, students will write poem using format.
5. Illustrate poem using Kid Pix.
6. Compile poems as a class biography/poetry book.Modifications:
- Assign reading buddy to help with reading or poem format.
- Tape record poems to be written by peer.
Enrichment Activities:![]()
- Students create a cinquain poem about a character in a biography they have read.
- Students create a Haiku poem about character in a biography they have read.
