| Lesson One: THE NET

The student will demonstrate the technological skills necessary to
use the Internet to access information.
Time Frame:
2-3 class periods
Materials:
Computer with Internet access, presentation device (LCD panel, TView,
or multimedia projector), Powerpoint lesson, activity worksheets, and evaluation
tools.

Teacher Notes:

The student will be introduced to the Internet through a Powerpoint
presentation entitled "Surf's Up", or an alternate approach.

The student will conduct an online tutorial at www.learnthenet.com.
Use the "Getting Started" location to identify components of the computer
and Internet (including computer parts and function, history of the Net,
safe use and netiquette)

Investigate the "LearntheNet" site for knowledge and understanding of
how to use the toolbars and to become familiar with relevant terms used
to navigate within the browser. Use the attached Activity 1, "The Net"
glossary worksheet, to define terms. As enrichment, students may create
a word search puzzle located at www.puzzlemaker.com

The student will conduct an online search using www.yahoo.com.
Use the attached Activity 2, "The Net" scavenger hunt, to complete this
exercise. After an introduction and practice hunt led by the teacher, the
student will follow the written directions to retrieve the information.

The student will apply knowledge of Internet tools to all curricular
areas to conduct research, explore occupations in various career families,
prepare written assignments, and complete projects. Integrated lessons
in two or more subject areas will incorporate information and skills learned.
Modifications:
Appropriate for all students in all subject areas.
Lesson may need to be modified according to the student's I.E.P.

In the top section of the Yahoo screen, click on Maps.

A box will appear on the screen.

Click on Driving Directions.

Under Starting Address, type in your own street address or route number.

Under Destination Address, type in the address of your school.
-
Click on Get Directions.

You will see a map with the route marked from your house to your school.
-
Read the map information carefully and determine how many miles it is
from your home to your school.
