Virtual Tour of Historical Sites

Grades: 3-4
Subjects:  Social Studies

Learner Outcomes:  Students will be able to recognize and locate the Liberty Bell,
                                  Mt. Rushmore, Statue of Liberty, Yellowstone National Park, and
                                  the Washington Monument.
 

Duration of Lesson:  Two 45 min. lessons

Materials:  reading material on each of the five landmarks, virtual tour handout,
              pencils, scissors, crayons

Technology Tools/Courseware:
Multimedia computers bookmarked with the following landmarks:Liberty Bell
 Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, Washington Monument, Yellowstone
National Park
Electronic encyclopedia.
 

Teacher Notes:
     The teacher needs to preview the following landmarks and have them bookmarked on the
      multi-media computers:  Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, Washington Monument, Yellowstone National Park

      The teacher should create a National Passport for each student so they can use it as a
       check off of the  places they have visited.

       Prior to the virtual tour the class will have discussed information about each of the
       five landmarks they will be visiting.
 
 

Procedures:
1st lesson:
          1. Students will read an informative selection from the list of books.
         2. Students will then read an informative selection from the electronic encyclopedia
              which is bookmarked on their multi-media computer.
          3. Students will color and cut out their National Passport to have ready for
               the next lesson.

2nd lesson:
           1. Hand out the Virtual Hunt worksheet to each student and explain that they will be
               looking for answers to each on  of these questions. They will be able to find these
               answers will taking their virtual tour.
            2. Students will log on to the computer and highlight the bookmarked places to
                start their virtual tour.
             3. Students will be directed to take their virtual tour and to visit as many landmarks
                 as they can in the given amount of time with correct responses on their Virtual
                Hunt worksheet.
             4. Upon completion of their virtual tour the students can share their findings with the
                 class as well as any other facts they may have discovered.
             5. The teacher should use a stamper or stickers for the students to place on their
                  National Passport to show their landmarks they visited.

Modifications:
                Teachers may need to use partners with those students having difficulty with
                 using the computers.
                 Teachers could have reading partners with students with special needs.

Enrichment Activities:
                   Upon completion of the unit lesson the students can try enrichment activities on
                   the following websites:
               Just For Kids section in the Yellowstone National Park website.
                Virtual Tour of Ellis Island ( this is a very interesting tour using children from
                     different countries as your tour guide explaining how they came to America)

Evaluation/Assessment:
                    Evaluation of the Virtual Tour will be the students' responses to the
                    Virtual Hunt.
