
Grades 3 -4 Social Studies Language Arts
Learning Outcomes:
The student will be able to identify the states in each region.
The student will be able to create a word search using the names of the
states
in a particular region.
The student will be able to log on to a bookmarked site on the Internet.
Duration of the Lesson:
2 thirty-minute class periods
1 half-hour computer lab period
several 15 minute class periods
Materials:
U.S. Regions Worksheet
Map of US worksheets [any US Map --helpful if it has capitals listed]
a folder for each student --"State Folder"
Technology Tools/Courseware:
computer with Microsoft Power Point
Map Directions Power Point Presentation
U.S. Regions Power Point Presentation
Internet access
data projector or television video hookup to computer

on all computers.
Make a copy of the U.S. Regions Worksheet
for each student.
Set up the data projector or television hookup prior to lesson.
If you are unfamiliar with the Puzzlemaker Site, go to the site and
practice using the site prior to the computer class lesson.
Prepare a State Folder for each student
Lesson Procedures:
First 30 minute class
period--
1. Show students Map Directions Presentation -- (The Compass
Rose is introduced and directions North, East, South, and West are discussed,
along with introduction of the five U.S. regions)
Follow notes on presentation.
2. As each region is introduced, have students color in that region
with same color as on map.
Write the name of the region beside, below, or above it.
3. Have students place the colored regions worksheet in their States
folders.
Second 30 minute class
period
1. Hand out the U.S. Region Worksheet.
2. Show the U.S. Regions Power Point Presentation. As you show
this presentation, have students write the names of the states on their
worksheets. [You will need to go slowly enough for students to write
the names down on their papers.].
3. Have students place worksheets in their States Folders and collect.
30 minute computer
lab period--
1.
Have students go to their assigned computers and log onto the Internet.
2. Ask them to go to Bookmarks and open "Puzzlemaker"; review how
to use the site.
3. Explain to the students that they will be creating a word search
using the names of the states.
4. Assign each student a region [count off by 5's -- Northeast -1;
Southeast -2; North Central -3.
South Central -4; West -5.]
5. Give students their U.S. Region Worksheets that they completed
during class period. Have them
circle the region for which they will be making the word search.
6. When students complete their word searches, print them.
15 minute class periods--
1.
Make five copies of each student worksheet. Give each student a word
search for each region.
2. Have students complete them during early morning worktimes.
3. Take up papers as they are completed [give 5 days for completion.]
Modifications:
Give a help-paper
with state abbreviations to special needs students. Let them write
the abbreviation
down instead of the entire state name during the Power Point presentation.
Partner special needs
students with other students when making the word search.

Projects
for USA Units
Find out the populations of each region by adding
up the populations of all the
states in the region. Compare the regions: which one has the
largest
population? discuss reasons why.
Create a products map. Look up each state in a region and list products
produced. Create a symbol for each product and place symbol on state
on
product map. Create questions about the resulting map.
