Learner Outcomes: The students will be able to identify several types of turtles by their shell patterns.

Time Frame: 1 hour – 1 ½ hours

Materials: Turtle and Tortoise by Vincent Serventy; poster board; square, circle, rectangle, and triangle sponge shapes; brown, black, and green paint; paint brushes, scissors, ribbon, and pencils.

Technology Tools/Courseware:  Computers with Internet access, scanner, digital camera, and projector.

Teacher Notes:

• Have parents come in during lesson to help students.
• Take pictures using a digital camera.
• View pictures with students/parents using a projector.

• Read the story Turtle and Tortoise by Vincent Serventy.
• Discuss and show pictures of different types of turtles in their natural environment scanned from the above book and from Internet sites.
• Display by using a projector.
• Then each student will pick which turtle they want to be.
• Turtle costumes will be made (see additional resources for pattern).
• Using pre-cut turtle shells, students will paint with the sponge shaped objects to match their chosen turtle.
• Upon completion, the student will put the shell on their body by threading a ribbon through pre-cut holes, and crossing the ribbon in front of their body.
• The fun begins when each child transforms into a turtle by crawling or swimming in a make believe pond.

Modifications: Adapt for special needs students, based on IEP's.

Enrichment Activity:  Turtle Habitats:

• Students will work with a large piece of butcher paper or newsprint divided into two vertical sections.
• Label the sections "Land", and "Sea".
• Place the paper at a workstation.
• Students will paint each section according to its label.
• Next, each child will create a turtle pattern, cut it out, and color it.
• Then students will glue his turtle in the appropriate habitat on the artwork.

Evaluation and Assessment: Observing the students while painting and pretending to be their favorite turtle.
