"A Pond With A View!"

Students will brainstorm the different types of pond animals and make a
graph listing the animals and indicating how many of each kind.

Teacher Notes:
-
Teacher should color, laminate,
and glue felt on to the back of the duplicate pond creatures patterns prior
to the lesson.

Guest speakers such as a forest
ranger or pet shop owner can visit the class.
-
If the school is close to a
"live pond", a field trip could be planned.
-
Parents will be needed for large
classes.
Procedures:
-
Read "Have You Seen My
Duckling?
-
Stop to ask students to search
each illustration to find the many different pond inhabitants.
-
Then write a child-generated
list of pond animals on chart paper.
-
After naming as many animals
as they can from the book, each student will brainstorm other pond dwellers.
-
Then invite a few students at
a time to illustrate some of the listed animals in the margins and open
spaces on the paper.
-
The teacher may want to use
a graph chart to count each pond animal.
-
Reinforce the identification
of pond creatures and their printed names with the song and pictures of
pond creatures.
-
Let students match animals with
the name card emphasizing the beginning sound.
-
Use flannel board and teacher-made
story pieces and sing the following song to the tune of "Are You Sleeping?"
(Beavers) swim here. (Beavers) swim here.
At the pond. At the pond.
(Beavers)live and sleep here.
(Beavers)live the sleep here.
At the pond. Green-blue pond.

Repeat the song, each time replacing
the underlined word with one of the following: turtles, frogs, ducks, or
snails.

assortment of waterproof craft
items (small plastic lids, sheets of craft foam, foam trays, egg cups,
packing pieces, wiggle eyes, pipe cleaner)

Procedure(s):

Read In The Small, Small
Pond by Denise Fleming.

Discuss different pond animals
and their movements.
-
Each child creates his own pond
creature using the provided materials.
-
Student experiment moving his
creature in various ways in the pond (water-table or tub).
-
You may need parent volunteers
to help with this project.

Observations and evaluate participation. Display finished work on
bulletin board.
