4.  develop a presentation on the career of their choice.


Duration of lesson:

1 day


Materials:

1.  Book Oh, the Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss
2.  (see technology equipment)


Technology Tools/Courseware:

1.  Multimedia computer with Internet access, web browser, writing processor software.
2.  Printer
3.  Digital camera


Teacher Notes:

1.  Oh, the Places You'll Go was the last new book published for children by Dr. Seuss before his death on September 24,1991.  He was 87 years old at the time of his death and had written the book less than one year before.
2.  Dr. Seuss presents a message about each person having to make his or her own decisions as he or she travels through life. This book deals with choices we make and the importance of setting goals. (Although the book is written on a lower reading level, the message is much more complicated.)
3.  Students will have a signed Acceptable Use Policy.
4.  Teacher and students will record students in various activities using the digital camera.


Procedures:

1.  Read to the students Dr. Seuss's Oh, the Places You'll Go stopping at various sections to discuss parts of the book and it's meaning.
2.  Discuss the words career, occupation and job.
3.  Divide students into groups for activities.
1.  Students will list qualities they think are important in a successful career person.
2.  Start a discussion on the various jobs or careers that students know about or that their parents have or people that they know.
3.  Use your career as a teacher for an example for the students to follow. Illustrate such things as why you choose this career, what you did in high school to prepare for it, what college you attended.
4.  Discuss with the class where and how to get information on various careers. (Cover requirements and other educational preparation needed for that career.(Mapping your future) Possible salary, definition of activities associated with the career, etc.) Then allow time for the students to thoroughly research their interests in a career of their choice.(Choosing a Career)
5. Have the students develop a presentation of their career that they researched. Let the students be creative here. Presentations could be videos, displays, etc. but all reports must have a written part.


Modifications:

1.  Students may need help with use of the Internet.
2.  This may be accomplished with a parent volunteer, older student or   teacher.
3.  Students may need more time to complete tasks.


Enrichment Activities:

1.  Students create a time line of events in the life of Dr. Seuss on a bulletin board.  Allow students to decorate the board with careers they could go into.
2.  Have parents and community people come in to speak on different occupations.


Evaluation/ Assessment:

1.  Observe and note student participation during the research phase of the lesson.
2.  Students written report.
3.  Students Power point lesson.
4.  Students Time line.
