ENERGY NEEDS

GRADE: 8-12

SUBJECT: MATH, HEALTH, SPORTS NUTRITION AND COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

LEARNER OUTCOMES:  Students will calculate their basal metabolic energy.

DURATION OF LESSON: One 90 minute period or two 45 minute periods

MATERIALS:  Graphing calculators, computers

TECHNOLOGY: Internet, word processing

TEACHER NOTES:

PROCEDURES:                                 FORMULA:  weight in pounds x 0.5 calorie per pound=basal energy needs per hour

(weight in kilograms x 1.0 calorie per kilogram=basal energy needs per hour)

basal energy needs per hour x 24 hours = basal energy needs
women use the same formula. Substitute 0.4 calorie for the BMR in the first
                                                      equation.

MODIFICATIONS: 1) Students have previous knowledge of computers and the Internet
                                    2) Students have previous knowledge of graphing calculators

ENRICHMENT: Calculate the three components of their energy expenditure.
Calories used per hour multiplied by the  hours of activity = energy expended.
Use Quia.com to create a game involving energy.
Using the site puzzlemaker.com, students will create a puzzle with their findings.

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT: Completion of the calculations and the graphs.
Written summary of the students findings.
