A Parade of Heroes
Grade Level:  1-4

Subjects: Language Arts, Social Studies, Art

Learner Outcomes:
This unit will help students to understand that:

Materials:
Corrugated cardboard
Art supplies

Internet sites
Digital Camera

Modifications:
Students with some religious preferences may be limited in the activities that they can do.

Lesson Objectives:
1.  The student will synthesize knowledge of unit concepts through culminating activities.
2.  The student will demonstrate mastery of unit concepts through on line journal responses.

Teacher notes:
These are suggested culminating activities. (Select depending on the grade level and time available)

*Writing activities:
  Take your hero/sheroe to the mall. Where will they shop?  What will they buy?
  Guess who's coming to dinner?  Plan a dinner party for your hero/sheroe and friends.
  Students can write about a hero and post it to My Hero   web site

*Art
  Design a vanity license plate for your hero
  Design refrigerator magnets depicting hero
  Design auto sunshades depicting hero
  Design a commemorative stamp

*Social Studies
  Have a parade of heros/sheroes.  Students will dress up as their favorite hero/sheroe.
  Living Museums.  Students who are dressed will be able to give pertinent information concerning their hero/sheroe.
  Use a digital camera to take pictures of culminating activities.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Completion of "Who Can Be a Hero?" handout
Teacher and peer evaluation of the unit and learner outcomes will be evident through these culminating activities
Students will complete  On Line Journal Prompts
rubric  has been provided for the Parade of Heroes
