VCR and the Video “Ocean” by Eyewitness
Day 2: The Poem: Earth's Oceans by
Tila Boyce
Overhead projector, Map of Earth Transparency
unlabeled, Marker,
Student copies of the map, colored pencils, crayon and/or markers
Days 3-4: Activity 1: Maps, atlases, salt
map recipe, salt, flour, water,
paint (green or brown and blue)
Activity 2: Computers, printers and Paint or similar program
Day 5: Blank map of Earth

TV, VCR, Overhead Projector, Computer, Printer and
Paint or similar program
Teacher Notes:
Procedure: Day 1:
1. Do a KWL
chart with students on the ocean.
2. Introduce the ocean unit by viewing the Eyewitness
video “Ocean” and
follow up with a discussion using the KWL
chart
Day 2: 1. Read and discuss the poem: Earth's
Oceans by Tila Boyce.
2. Using the overhead projector to display an unlabeled map
of the earth,
As a group label continents and the oceans on the map. Before making
their maps, the students should be familiar with the geographical locations
of the land areas and water areas.
3. Give each student an unlabeled copy of
the map to label clearly
and color.
Day 3: 1. Begin with a review of the five oceans using the
maps, globe and the
poem: Earth's Oceans by Tila Boyce
2. Finish the KWL
chart.
3. Break students into two groups to rotate through the following
activities
over the next few days.
Activity 1: Salt map of Earth
Activity 2: Use Paint or similar program to make a map of Earth
Day 4: Repeat day 3 rotating the groups.
Day 5: 1. Student will paint and label their salt maps.
2. Closing Activity: Students label the oceans on a blank
map.
