Materials: Day 1: The
Poem: Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel
Taylor Coleridge,
salt, teaspoons, cotton swabs, large clear bowls, small glasses, saran
wrap,
Large rubber bands, masking tape, clay, and containers of warm water.
Day 2: Internet, Encyclopedia software, various books (encyclopedias,
storybooks,
Ocean theme books), and Excel (online
tutorial)
Technology Tools/Courseware: Internet Computer, Encyclopedia Software and Excel
Teacher Notes:
Procedure: Day 1:
1. Introduce the lesson by reading the Poem: Rime
of the Ancient Mariner
by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
2. Explain that you will be doing a hands on activity.

* Attached is the step by step procedure to
complete
this activity in case you do not have access to the
science text.
3. In conclusion of the activity students will write their
observations on paper
telling what happened when they tasted the mixture.
Day 2: 1. Review what happened when the saltwater
was set in the sun for a day.
2. Allow students to taste the mixtures from the glass as well as
the bowl.
3. Students will write their observations from when they tasted
the mixture
after it sat in the sun for a day.
4. Divide students into groups of four.
5. Using the Internet, encyclopedia software and various books the
students
will conduct a search for the minerals composed in ocean water.
6. Students will take notes on the information found and their percentages.
7. Students will then use their notes to write a report on their
findings about the
minerals found in the ocean.
8. Students will then graph their information using the program Excel
(online tutorial).
9. Discuss findings to conclude the lesson.
10. Students will create their own Acrostic Poem (using template provided)
on
Minerals. (MS Word Format) (PDF
Format using Acrobat Reader)
11. Students will then complete their facts and questions guide.
Modifications:
* Group students that have physical limitations with stronger students
that
can help them set up the activity.
* Provide handouts that have the information of the composition of the
ocean water for students
to take notes from if the internet and CD Rom encyclopedia are not available.
* Follow modifications on all IEPs and 504 plans
