Materials: warm water, clock, clear medium
sized bowl, colored ice cube

Make sure that you have Acceptable
Use Policies signed for using the internet, and that you have made
notes as to who is not allowed to use it in the case of a substitute has
to teach a lesson.

Make colored ice cube with colored food coloring

Students are not to put ice cubes into their
mouths
Procedures: Day 1

Inform students that they will be doing a
hands on activity dealing with movement below the waters surface (current)
taken from Harcourt Science.

Introduce the lesson by reading the poem
The Tide Rises,
The Tide Falls by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Students will use dictionaries to define
wave, tide, surface current, and deep ocean current.

Students will use the internet to find the
differences between a wave and a tide.

Students will use the internet to find the
differences between surface current and deep ocean current.

Students will label the parts
of a wave.

Students will create a acrostic poem about
tides. (in MS Word Format)
(In PDF Format which requires Acrobat
Reader)

Provide various books dealing with the tides
and the moon's gravitational pull.

Students will use the information they gathered
to make a presentation for the class,

e.g.. (PowerPoint, oral reports, visual aids,)
Modifications: Day 1 and 2

Pair students with physical limitations with
others that can assist them.

Provide students with a diagram of a wave.
Model how it is labeled, then provide a blank diagram for them to model.

Be sure to follow modifications on students
IEPs and 504 plans.
Enrichment:
-
Students will research the trade route that
existed in colonial times. Then on a blank
world map students will label the route.
Evaluation:

Evaluation will be based on notes taken from
sources, correctly labeled diagram of a wave, explanation of moon's involvement
with tides, students presentations to the class
