Learner Outcomes:
The students will learn about the barter system by using the internet.
The students will learn how the coin currency and money is made and take
a video field trip to the mint via
"The Money Story" by the United States Mint and The Bureau of Engraving
and Printing.
The students will make a money book using pictures from the internet and
tell what metal each coin is
made out of. The students will make a money dictionary and look up
terms on the internet.
Duration of Lesson:
Three one hour periods
Materials:
The
Monster Money Book, "The Money Story",
construction paper, glue, scissors, computer,
monitor, printer, internet
access, "Coin Critter", stapler.

Teacher Notes:
Procedures:
Day 1
1.
Introduce the unit with the story "The
Monster Money Book"
2.
Have discussion on money terminology.
3.
Watch the video "The Money Story."
4.
Have the students draw different ideas to trade (barter system).
Day 2
1. Use the internet to find pictures of money and make a picture money
book out of construction paper.
2. Use the Microsoft
Word for the word processing program.
Day 3
1. Make a money word dictionary using the following terms allowance, bill,
barter, cent, dollar, borrow,
budget, cash, check, coin, debit, donation, dues, earn, expense, interest,
invest, lend, money,
price, profit, save, savings account, spend, treasurer, withdraw.
2. Divide up word list so each group has an equal number to look up. Publish
students work on
Microsoft Word.
Modifications:
Be aware of the students
with IEP/504 plans and their modification. Pair with a buddy.
Enrichment Activities:
Compare the US currency
to other countries currency.

1. Students will be asked
to identify and asked the value of different coins and bills.
