Procedures:
Day 1
1. Begin the lesson by reading the book "Real
World Math: Money and Other Numbers In Your Life"
by Donna Guthrie
2. Tell students they are going to create a coin cookie.
3. Show students the coin cookie worksheet and go over the rules
as stated. Make sure students
understand that they can purchase anything
they want as long as they don't go over $5.00
4. Have students use a paper copy of coin cookie to list everything
they are purchasing. Number 1 on
their list should be cookie. Number 2
should be icing. If more than one serving is purchased it needs to be listed
5. Students total their list, then check by using a calculator.
6. Students will publish their coin cookie worksheet by going to the computer
and hyper linking the
worksheet and filling it in.
7. Using the Coin Cookie Diagram and crayons/colored
pencils students need to draw the items they are
going to purchase as stated on the
Coin Cookie Worksheet.
Day 2
1. Have items lined up and ready for students to purchase. (A muffin pan
works great).
2. Students need to figure up how much change they will receive after purchasing
their items.
3. Students purchase the items as listed on their Coin
Cookie Worksheet. Students will give you their
five dollar bill then count the correct change that they will get back.
4. Using their Coin Cookie Diagram as a
guide students will decorate their cookie.
5. Students will take pictures of each other with the cookie they've created.
6. Students will print their own picture and add a caption to it. Eat and
enjoy or put in a zip lock for later.
