Learner Outcomes:

The students will:
1.  create a bio-poem about their endangered animal and illustrate the project (pictures of their endangered animal in its habitat, diet components, etc.).
2.  Students will peer-edit their bio-poems within their groups.
3.  Students will create their final published work using Word, Word Art, or Paint.
Duration of Lesson:  45 minutes

Materials:

pencil, paper, markers/crayons
Technology Tools/Courseware:  Microsoft Word or PowerPoint

Teacher Notes:

1.  The teacher will need to teach the concept of bio-poems before the lesson.
2.  The writing process should be reviewed before the lesson begins.
Procedures:
1.  The teacher needs to teach the concept of a bio-poem to the students and provide example.
2.  The students need to use the information from their endangered animal journal to complete the eleven line format provided by the teacher.
3.  Each group will edit their own poems.
4.  The students will create their final copy.
5.  Each student will illustrate his or her bio-poem.
6.  Each student will use Word, Word Art, or Paint to complete their final copy of their bio-poem complete with illustrations.
Modifications:
1.  Check individual education plans to see if any additional changes need to be made for students.
Enrichment Activities:
1.  Students could create a paragraph from the perspective of the endangered animal and write about how they feel, what they need, and their concerns for their environment.
