Title: Lesson 4  "Will the Brand Make It Grand?"

Procedures:

1.  Choose three products for the students to sample. For our lesson we chose corn, whipped cream, and pumpkin pie.  Have a bowl with the generic in one bowl and the name brand in another bowl.   Under the bowl label it either generic or name brand.  Students should not be able to see the label. Then put a label in front of the bowl with the letter A or B.
2.  Give the students a recording form so he/she can list his/her preference.  Have each student try the product and record the preference.
3.  Then have students tally the class results and chart in Excel.
4.  After the students have charted the results then reveal the name brand and generic for each product.
5.  Discuss cost comparisons for each product.
6.  List times cost would outweigh taste considerations or the reverse.
Modifications:

Enrichment Activities:  You could extend this to include a comparison of ingredients.  Students could compare labels.
