Civil War:  Pieces of the Puzzle Lesson 3

     Students will  use the data to make a stem and leaf plot and frequency table.  The data will also be used to find mean, median, mode and range.

Time Frame:
3 (50 minute) class periods

Muster roll roster
Paper and pencil

Teacher Notes:
     This lesson allows students to transfer data (soldiers' ages)  from a spreadsheet to a stem and leaf plot.   Students will use the stem and leaf plot to find mean, median, mode and range.  Students will transfer the name of towns into a frequency table.

Procedures:

  • Students will use the 4th West VirginiaVolunteer Infantry Muster Roll information and make a spreadsheet of soldiers' ages.
  • From the spreadsheet data, students will hand draw a stem and leaf plot.
  • From the stem and leaf plot, students will find the mean, median, mode, and range.
  • Students will make a frequency table using the names of the towns from which the soldiers were mustered.

     Modifications:
    Students will work in pairs to interpret spreadsheet and make stem and leaf plots.

    Enrichment activities:
    Students could use the internet to find muster rolls or enlistment records from other regions or wars and compare averages of soldiers ages.
