1. Let students explore Kids
Safety Tips as an introduction to the lesson.
2. Brainstorm what you should say if you ever
have to call 911. Review Calling 911 with students
and have them print
out the information for themselves.
3. Discuss fire safety in the home and the importance
of a fire escape plan. Use a projection
device to display Escape
with the Miller Family .
4. Using Our
Escape Plan have students print the page to take home to make
a fire
escape plan with their
family. They will bring it back to school the following day with
a
parent's signature.
5. Have students print Emergency
Phone Numbers . Use a local phone directory to look up
the
phone numbers. Verify
that students have the correct numbers written down.
6. Discuss the 911 Emergency system. Inform
students concerning when they should use 911 and
the information they should
give the dispatcher. Students can go to the 911
education web site
for more information and
activities.
7. Divide students into groups of 3 or 4.
Give them an index card with a fire scenario
listed on it.
Have students make up a skit
about how the would react in each situation and contact 911.
8. Video tape each skit and display it for others
to see.

Take into consideration any students with IEP/504
Plans.
