paper, pencil, crayons/colored pencils/markers, poster board or large, unlined
chart paper, Mr. Yuk stickers
Technology Tools/Courseware:
Computer with internet access, printer, Microsoft
Word, PowerPoint software, projection
device, Adobe

Teacher Notes:
Day 1:
1. Have students brainstorm about what is a poison.
List the responses on the board. Differentiate
between a definition and an example.
Allow a student to look up the definition. Use a projection
device to show the students the
Mr. Yuk website. Discuss their findings.
2. Have students come to the board to list poisons they
might find in their homes. Refer back to the Mr.
Yuk website to aid the students with
their list.
3. Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Assign
each group a room of a house. Using chart paper,
students will diagram the room marking
the locations of the poisons found in their assigned room.
Each group will post their diagram
in a central place for everyone to view.
4. Once a group has displayed their list of poisons,
have them go to the computer and visit the website
KidSpace
to look at poisons found in their assigned room. They can also go to the Common Poison
website which lists poisons in each
room in a house. If the group wishes to add to their posted list,
they may.
5. When each group has completed their list, have the
students individually write a paragraph on poisons
found in the home. They may
use the posted lists for help. Explain the characteristics of good
paragraph writing.
Once they have finished their paragraphs, have them edit their paragraphs
with a
friend. Once changes are made,
have the students type the finished product on the computer
using a program such as Microsoft
Word. The teacher may use a rubric to grade
the paragraphs.
6. When students complete their paragraphs, have them
select a coloring
book page to print and color.
7. Send the checklist
home for students to complete with their parents that will help identify poisons
in
their home.
Day 2:
1. Review the returned checklists
from Day 1 during a whole group discussion.
2. Brainstorm on how to poison proof a home. Allow
the students to get back into the groups from Day
1 to revisit the poisons found in
their particular room. While in their groups, have them make a
poster depicting how to poison proof
their room. They may go to the KidSpace
site or any another
site listed in the references to get information on how to poison
proof the room. Review how to
make a rough draft of a sketch on
paper before putting it on poster board or large, unlined chart
paper. Have each group present
their poster to the class, discussing the safety features they added to
their room.
3. Review with students how to make a PowerPoint presentation. Let
each group make a 1 or 2 slide
presentation of their particular
room. Allow them to present it to the class. You may want to put
all the slides together for a class
presentation.
4. Students who finish may work on a poison prevention
puzzle.
5. Discuss with students the Poison Control Center.
Give out Mr. Yuk stickers
for the students to place
on poisons in their homes.
6. Once back in their seat, they should complete a
rubric
on each student's cooperation within the group.
