 Learner Outcomes:

  • Students will learn basic bicycle safety rules. 
  • Students will learn basic items to wear for bike safety 
  • Students will learn traffic signs and signals. 
  • Students will participate in a bicycle safety course. 
Duration of  Lesson:

      3- 45 minute class periods (longer time may be required for a larger class )

Materials:
 

  • Pretend traffic signs made on poster board 
  • Markers 
  • Colored masking tape 
  • Cones 
  • Helmets 
  • Knee and elbow pads 
  • Bicycle(s) 
Technology/Tools:
  • Computer 
  • Internet 
Teacher Notes:
  • Written statement from parents that their child can ride a bike. 
  • Permission forms from parents to participate in bicycle activity. 
  • Make traffic signs using poster board and markers. 
  • Secure bicycle course such as a parking lot or a hardtop playground. 
  • Obtain cones for bicycle course. 
  • Set up course using cones, masking tape, and traffic signs. 
  • Before activity obtain helmets, knee, and elbow pads. 
  • Obtain a bicycle in good working condition . 
  • Parent permission for students to access the Internet. 
  • Procedures: 
    • Make sure all students can ride a bike. 
    • Using computers and the Internet, the teacher will have students go to City Biking and read the information presented. 
    • Students will click on the following icons and read the information: What to Wear, Danger Zones, and Finish Line. 
    • Discuss as a whole class the information read. 
    • Click on Bike Tour icon and read. 
    • Click on Equipment Check and read. 
    • Click on Helmet Junction and read. 
    • Students will go to Kidshealth.com. 
    • Click on Watch Out and read the article. 
    • Click on Steering Your Way to Bicycle Safety and read the article. 
    • Students will go to Traffic Sign Quiz for Kids and use their mouse to learn traffic signs and take the quiz. 
    • Students will go to Bicycle Safety for Kids .  Read the safety rules and take the quiz. 
    • After completion of computer activity direct students to the designated bicycle course. 
    • Using a bicycle, demonstrate to students equipment to check on a bike to ensure it is safe to ride. 
    • Students will demonstrate the following hand signals used when riding a bike:  left turn, right turn, stop. 
    • Each student will have an opportunity to travel the bicycle course obeying the traffic signs along the route. ( Be sure students wear a helmet and pads.) 
    • While waiting or when finished students can observe other classmates. 
Modifications:
  • Check IEP's for special needs students. 
Enrichment Activities:
  • Students can access bicycle history. 
  • Students can make bicycle safety posters. 
Evaluation/Assessment:
  • Students will perform a safety checklist for a bicycle. This will be done orally. 
  • Students will demonstrate hand signals. 
  • Students will demonstrate a knowledge of traffic signals while doing the bicycle activity.
