Duration of Lesson:  One or two forty-five minute class periods

Technology/Tools:  Computer
                               Internet

Teacher Notes:

  • Permission forms for Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Computers with Internet access.
Procedures:
  1. Using computers and the Internet, the teacher will have students go to KidsHealth.org.
  2. Students will click on the Enter Kids Icon.
  3. Students will click on Watch Out.
  4. Students will click on Staying Safe In the Water.
  5. Students will read the rules for swimming in pools, lakes, beaches, and water parks.
  6. After reading the article, the students and the teacher will discuss what they learned about safe swimming.
  7. Students will go to Start on their computers.
  8. Students will click Programs.
  9. Students will click Accessories.
  10. Students will click Paint.
  11. Students will make a safe swimming picture in Paint.
  12. Students may go to the Swimming for Kids site.
  13. Students may scroll down to Kids Court.
  14. Students can choose from several games to play with swimming themes.


Modifications: Check IEP's for special needs students.

Enrichment Activities:

  • Have a lifeguard visit the class to discuss safe swimming.
  • Take a field trip to an area pool and practice safe swimming rules.
