Stay Alert, Don't Get Hurt 
Webquest



Grade levels: 5-6

Subjects:  English/Language Arts, Technology, and Health

Learner Outcomes:

  • Students will access information from the internet in a webquest.  
  • Students will use a word processing program to write answers to safety related questions. 
  • Students will share newly acquired information with class. 
Duration of lesson: one 45 minute class

Materials: 

  • Copy of webquest directions 
Technology Tools/Courseware:
    • Internet accessible computers (one per student) 
    • Word processing program, such as Microsoft Word 
    • Projection device 
Teacher Notes:
      • Make sure each student has an Acceptable Use Policy on file. 
      • Teacher should be familiar with webquest questions before teaching class.  
      • Teacher should have working knowledge of Microsoft Word as well as surfing the net. 
Procedures:
 
  1. Using projection device, project the webquest sites for students to see.  Each site will have two questions to be answered on the worksheet provided. 
  2. Begin by directing students to The Super Safety Site  and answer questions 1 and 2 from the worksheet.  Students will proceed to each of the next sites at their own pace. 
  3. Summer Safety and write down the answers to questions 3 and 4. 
  4. Kid Safety to answer questions 5 and 6. 
  5. Sparky the Fire Dog for the answers to questions 7 and 8. 
  6. SafeKids.com to answer questions 9 and 10. 
  7. At each site, students should copy the title of the site and hunt for the answers to the questions . Answer as many questions from the worksheet as time allows.  
  8. If he/she cannot connect to a site listed right away press STOP on the toolbar and type in another address.  Return to the skipped site later to get the information requested. 
  9. Students will share answers to questions in last 10 minutes of class. 
  10. Teacher will evaluate worksheets. 
Modifications:
    • Check students IEPs for necessary modifications. 
    • Visually impaired students will use large font. 
    • Mentally impaired students may work with a partner.
