Title:  Lesson 4    " Tessellation Tussle"

Grade Levels:  4th and 5th

Subjects:

•  able to construct a tessellation.

Materials:

• paper
• oak tag
• crayons, colored pencils
• scissors
• math journals
• tessellation puzzles (optional)

• Computer with Internet Access
• PowerPoint Tutorial

Make sure students have permission forms for internet access.

Procedures:

• Put word tessellations on the board and have students write in their math journals what they think that word means.
• Have students research the net for information on tessellations.  See References below for possible sites.
• Group students.  Give each group an overhead projector sheet to write examples of tessellations they have encountered in their everyday world.
• Have students share their lists.
• Have students complete the tessellation activity

• Use pattern blocks instead of drawing the tessellations.

Enrichment:

• Design wrapping paper using tessellations and cover a book.
