Origami Lesson 5

Grade Levels: fourth and fifth

Subjects:  Math, Language Arts, Social Studies

Learner Outcomes:

• Students will learn the history of origami.
• Students will learn how to follow directions to complete a project.
• Students will be able to identify geometric shapes.

Materials:

Paper- cut in squares

Teacher Notes:

Make sure the students have permission slips to access Internet

Procedures:

• Have students review the geometric shapes that they have studied in this unit.
• Introduce origami and discuss how it relates to geometry.
• Have students research the history of origami.
• Use PowerPoint presentation to guide students to make a crane.
• Have students research other origami shapes.  See references below.

For students who have difficulty with manual dexterity substitute the folding of a box for the crane.

Enrichment:

Have students do some of the more complicated origami models.
