Jack and Jill  Sequencing

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Learner Outcomes:  The Students will be able to:

Listen to the nursery rhyme "Jack and Jill"
Recite nursery rhyme
Understand and follow a sequence of events in the nursery rhyme
Identify first, next, and last
Students act out the nursery rhyme using a pail, pillow, blanket, and bandages

Duration of Lesson:   Four 30-minute sessions

Materials:

Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme Book (Scholastic)
Video of "Jack and Jill"
Pail, pillow, blanket and bandages
Water
Pictures to sequence (worksheet)

Technology Tools/Courseware:

Digital Camera
Video Camera
Data Projector to display pictures
Television/VCR
Multimedia computer with internet access
Lingui Systems "Blooming Mother Goose"

Teacher Notes:

Make copy of sequence cards for students
All students must have school, county, state Acceptable Use Policy signed before using the internet with permission from parents for students picture to be used if placed on the Internet
Have alternate activity for any student not allowed to use Internet
Teacher should pair partners beforehand for Jack and Jill acting
  should choTeacherose teams beforehand for relay race
Take pictures with digital camera and use pictures to sequence in a PowerPoint presentation or school's web page
Allow time for inserting pictures into PowerPoint presentation
Use video camera to record play and relay activity
Student's props are pail, pillow, bandages, blanket and water

SESSION 1

Procedures:

        1. Students recite Jack and Jill rhyme as teacher leads it 
        2. Introduce and discuss vocabulary

crown caper mend
hill fell trot
fast pail fetch
tumbling up vinegar
down hurt after

        3. Student will review first, next, and last
        4. Students will make predictions based on teacher's questions
        5. Put the sequence cards in order

SESSION 2
Procedures:

        1. Students recite Jack and Jill rhyme as teacher leads it 
        2. With partner students will act out the rhyme.  Teacher or volunteer will take pictures or videotape the play.
        3. Discuss the sequence of events

SESSION 3

Procedures:

        1. Teams will run relay race while holding pail of water (make sure students can lift the pail of water)
        2. Student's make predictions on what happens to water
        3. Team that finishes the relay first with most water in pail
        5. Use a digital or video camera to record to later show class.  
 

SESSION 4

        1. View the pictures in the PowerPoint presentation
        2. Show the school-made video
        3. Discuss the sequence of pictures and results of relay

Modifications:

All modifications for each IEP and 504 document will be made
Students will work in cooperative groups
Use visual aides for non-reader 

Enrichment Activities:

Play rhyming game; say word, student repeats word that rhymes
Show students pictures of wells from which water can be drawn.  Then, give them a cardboard box, rope, and cardboard rollers to build a well for display in class.
Invite school nurse to class to show your students how to bandage an injury on the head, arm, leg.  Ask her to show the students different types of bandages and when each one is used. Then let your students use gauze to bandage heads on small dolls. Or let them practice on each other.
