Time Frame:
One thirty minute class period.
Materials:

Information sheet to record research.

Reference sources such as Encarta, World Book,
or Compton's Encyclopedias CD-ROM.

Procedures:

An introduction to this unit will consist of
referring to Chapter 11 in HBJ Health Series, Grade 5 and 6.
-
After a brief discussion of the need for recycling,
students will then work in groups of twos, using their Search
Information Sheet. The research portion will take place in the
computer lab so that all students will be able to work at the same time.

The students will discuss the term: Recycling.
(Refer to page 363 in HBJ Grade 6 Health textbook or page 358 in HBJ Grade
5 Health textbook. Discussion should pull from prior knowledge of
this subject.

The students will work in groups of two (Research
Team)...(to save time, have partners established prior to lesson with names
on Search Information Sheet).

The students will visit Virtual
Recycling. The students will list 8-10 items that can be recycled
as well as writing a short description of recycling and its importance.
Facts can be obtained from Encyclopedia CD-ROM, Internet sites: Get
the Facts on Recycling , Virtual
Recycling, and Health textbook.
Modifications:
Teachers should
determine pairing of students so students with special needs might be assisted
during lesson activities.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Students will submit
their Search Information Sheet for evaluation. Points will be awarded
for completed sections.
