Teacher Notes:
The Recycle Relays can
be used in Physical Education class. It would be nice to do this activity
on Earth Day, April 22. With 5 team members, each team will complete
the relays trying to achieve a competitive time. Parents can help with
gathering materials needed for the relays.
Procedures:
-
Relay 1: Each team
consists of five members. One weaves a trash container through cones;
another weaves the container back. The next student runs down and
picks up newspapers previously placed next to each cone and puts the papers
in the paper recycle box. The next student runs down and crushes five aluminum
cans and puts them in the can recycle container. The fifth team member
does the same. Last, all of the five members run down and dump a
trash container filled with plastic items, aluminum cans, and papers.
They must sort these items into the proper recycle container, Teams
are timed and scores are recorded (tally sheet). Results can
be posted if desired.
-
Relay 2: Form three
or four equal numbered teams. Place a bag of trash items (empty cereal
boxes, plastics containers, milk cartons etc.) in front of each line and
an empty bag at the end of each line. Put the same number of items
in each bag as there are team members. Tell the first student in
each row to take a trash item when the signal to begin is given.
Have students pass the item overhead to the person behind them. The
other team members pass the item in the same manner. When it reaches
the last person in line, he/she drops the trash into the bag behind him
and runs up to the front of the line. There he/she begins passing
another piece of trash. Plays continues until one team has passed
back all of its trash.
-
While students are participating, pictures should
be taken with a digital camera. Pictures of the activities will be
posted on the School Home Page.
