How Does Your Island Measure Up?
    Lesson 3

    GRADE LEVEL: Grades 7-9

    LEARNER  OUTCOMES:

    • Student will convert leagues into a standard unit of measurement.
    • Students will draw the island of the blue dolphin to scale using the computers paint shop program.
    • Students will estimate perimeter and area of the island of the blue dolphin.
    • Students will collect and organize information on bar graph.


    DURATION OF LESSON: Two 50/min. periods of class time needed to complete lesson

    MATERIALS NEEDED:

    • scientific calculator
    • computer with paint shop program
    • paper
    • pencils
    • colored pencils


    PROCEDURES:

    • Teacher will  read second chapter of Island of the Blue Dolphins emphasizing description of island.
    • Students will be taken to computer lab and instructed to go to Explore the Island.
    • Draw island to scale on paper using scientific calculators to calculate and estimate perimeter and area.
    • Use rough draft to complete project on computer's paint shop program.
    • Use Microsoft Excel to create a bar graph of the information collected.
    • Answer the questions from chapter 2 listed on the linked website.


    ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY:

    • The student will use computers to Explore the Island.
    • Students can search the indicated sites to learn more about The Island of the Blue Dolphins.


    MODIFICATIONS: material read aloud, color code island locations, calculator use as per I.E.P.
