Lesson 3: Helpful Indians

Grade Levels: 1-3

Learner Outcomes:

• Students will discuss ways in which the Indians helped the pilgrims in the New World.
• Students will use basic art skills of cutting, coloring and pasting to make Indian boys and girls.
• Students will use cooperative learning skills to play an Indian counting game.

Materials:

• The Book Young Squanto and the First Thanksgiving by Andrew Woods
• 9" x 12" white drawing paper
• 9" x 12" brown construction
• crayons
• glue
• scissors
• tag board
• markers
• woven basket

Teacher Notes:

Procedures:

1. Read the book Young Squanto The First Thanksgiving by Andrew Woods to the class.
2. Make Indian boys and Indian girls with hand shaped art directions.
3. Make and play Native American counting game.

Modifications:  Some students may need assistance making their napkin ring.

Enrichment Activities:

• Indian boy and girl color sheets
• Indian paper dolls (body,  boy's outfit,  girl's outfit)
