Procedures:
Day 1
1. Proceed by asking students what they know about tobacco and what they would like to know.
2. Display KWL chart and record answers. Use KWL chart throughout the lessons to record information into the learned column.
3. Divide class into small groups to research health risk of tobacco use. Have students record information and source on index cards. Display index cards on bulletin board. Have students view site Smoking Stinks.
4. Discuss information students discovered. Record in the learned column of the KWL.
5. Discuss any questions students may still have about tobacco's effects.
Day 2
1. Ask volunteers or call on students to read the textbook pages 244-251 or the resources used at your school.
2. Ask students to write about their reasons for not smoking. This can be done in a Health journals or as homework.
Day 3
1. Review tobacco's effects on the respiratory system.
2. Assign small group of students a topic to research (smoking, chewing, dipping, or sniffing). Instruct students to list toxins used to produce the tobacco products. Use to record information.
3. Add the list to the bulletin board displayed on Day 1.
Day 4
1. Instruct students to type a letter to a friend about the dangers of using tobacco and to use at least 5 of the vocabulary words in the letter. Remind student to use correct punctuation and acceptable letter format. Display sample friendly letter if needed. Software program with spell check and other editing tool will be used.
2. Ask volunteers to share letters with class.
3. Encourage students to mail their letters. Supply students with stamps and envelopes to mail letter wish.
