Day 1
1. Read and discuss Chapter 6, Lesson 1, "How Medicines Help the Body".
2. Instruct pairs of students to brainstorm and list, why it is important to know about possible side effects a medicine may cause.
3. Students take turns reading list to class.
Day 2
1. Begin by asking students what they know about drugs.
2. Record facts on chalkboard.
3. Circle health factors and discuss.
4. Underline problems caused by drugs (family, peers, and careers)
5. Divide class into small groups.
6. Instruct students to search internet for "news" and choose a site.
7. Ask students to use the site search to locate drug related news. After choosing and reading an article, instruct students to summarize article by explaining "social, legal, physical, emotional, and financial consequences of drug use.
Day 3
1. Review consequences of drug use discovered in lesson Day 1.
2. Ask students in pairs to list future short term and long term goals for themselves.
3. Ask students to locate and print pictures from internet depicting these goals.
4. Ask students to compile picture and sort into goal themes.
5. Construct a bulletin board titled "101 Things To Do Instead of Drugs".
*If student run out of ideas before they reach 101 offer fun or relaxing activities students may enjoy.
Enrichment/Activities:
Writing- small group presentation of social, legal, physical, emotional, and financial consequences of drug use using Powerpoint Presentation.
