"Booze Clooze"
Learning How To Refuse
Title: Lesson 3

    Forty five minutes, plus review, evaluation, interactive time on the computer, and
    additional activities selected by teacher.

Materials:

1.  Instruct students to preview Chapter 7 Lesson 3, pages 260-265 in their health books by scanning the titles, headings, pictures, and charts. Ask for volunteers to speculate on what they will be learning.

2.  Ask students the following questions:

Explain that, just as people have the right to refuse foods and activities that they don't like, everyone has the right to refuse alcohol or substances they don't like.

3.  After the class has read Lesson 3 together, present the PowerPoint presentation "Ways to say No."

4.  Direct students' attention to the chart on the powerpoint presentation. After viewing the presentation, invite the students to give examples of what someone might say for each strategy given.

5.  Teacher will remind the class that there is no one correct way to refuse. Tell students that the only right way to refuse alcohol is a way that lets them walk away.

6.  Students will view The "No!" Video.

7.  Students will search this health site.   After the class reviews Refusal Skills in textbook, they will then complete the worksheet in the Activity Workbook, page 46.

8.  The class will then practice using the Refusal Skills in small groups of  3 or 4 students. Life Skills on pages 266-267 will then be read to the class by the teacher. Direct students' attention to the photos on these pages while reviewing the refusal skills. Conclude the lesson by discussing which refusal skill would be appropriate for each situation presented.

6) Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal setting and decision- making skills to enhance health. Performance indicators focus on setting reasonable and attainable goals and developing positive decision- making skills.
