"What is Wrong With Inhalants?"
Grade Level: 5th Grade

Learner Outcomes:
1. Students will participate in class discussion about oxygen's importance to life and functioning, with emphasis on body systems and brain function.
2. Students will learn that inhalant use refers to the intentional breathing of gas or vapors with the purpose of reaching a rush or high.
3. Students will learn that inhalants are legal, everyday products which have a useful purpose, but can be deadly when misused.
4. Students will discuss the need for adequate room ventilation, parental supervision, how to read and follow directions when using common household products.
5. Students will learn about the effects that using inhalants has on their bodies. View the effects of inhalants:
6. Students will learn about the short and long term effects of inhalant use.
Duration of Lesson: 60 Minutes.
Materials:
pencil, paper, can of hair spray, bottle of nail polish remover, can of spray paint, tube of super glue, felt-tip permanent marker, bottle of correction fluid, can of spray deodorant, blackboard, chalk and worksheet.

Teacher Notes:
1. Begin the class by having students take a deep breath of air and then discuss how important that oxygen is to their health. Ask how many of them have been in places (at home or school) where gases or vapors make it difficult for them to breathe. Continue by discussing what happens as a result of smelling these gases or vapors.
2. Display the products and then begin class discussion about the usefulness of each product. Introduce the word inhalants. Write it on the blackboard. Teach the class that inhalants refers to the intentional breathing of gas or vapor with the purpose of getting a rush or a high.
3. Tell the class that these gases or vapors that they smell are poisons and toxic chemicals which slow down the body's functions. Cutting off oxygen that keeps the brain and the body healthy.
4. Teach that these inhalants can cause the user to suffer from Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome. Students will search the internet Inhalants site to define the meaning of Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome.
5. Students will draw a picture of their home. They will label the house and where each household product would be located in each room of their house. (This should take no longer than five to ten minutes.)
6. The students will be group divided into teams of fours. Each team will be given a household product that is on display. The team will have five minutes to examine the product. They will read the labels to determine the usefulness of the product, if the product has a warning label, they will tell what kind of warning, and explain how to handle the product safely. The team members will choose a team leader who will give a brief speech about the product.
7. Teach the students the short term effects of inhalant use include heart palpitation, breathing difficulty, and short term memory loss.
8. Teach the students the long term effects of inhalant use include damage to the brain, as well as the nerve cells, the heart and lungs.
9. Students will be given a worksheet containing the commonly used words associated with inhalant use. The class will discuss the words and where they might hear these words used.
10. The class will review the lesson. Upon completion, the students will complete a fact worksheet about inhalants. Students will list ten facts that were presented in this lesson.
Modifications:
Oral reading, open class discussion, peer tutoring, as well as following recommendations on student IEP.
Enrichment Activities:
Students will write a summary of the lesson. This will include facts taught in this lesson. They will also include ways of alerting the public to the dangers associated with the dangers of inhalant use.
Evaluations/Assessment:
This will include open class discussion and class participation. The teacher will also use a checklist to identify 10 facts that were presented in this lesson, each fact is worth 10 points each.
