• Students will describe incidents of positive and negative peer pressure.
• Students will demonstrate refusal strategies.

Materials: 

• KWL Chart
• Vocabulary Guide
• Brainstorming Activity Page
•  Peer Pressure Worksheet

• overhead projector and screen
• computers with Internet access
• LCD projector for Powerpoint Presentation

• Permission slip for Internet use.
• Preview Internet links and determine feasibility to lesson and your classroom
• Teacher observation while students are on the Internet
• If LCD projector is not available, copy powerpoint pages and make transparencies to be used on overhead
• Duplicate activity sheets needed for lesson  (Vocabulary Guide, Brainstorming Activity Worksheet, and Peer Pressure Worksheet)

Procedures:

   Day 1:

• Proceed by asking the students what they know about peer pressure and what they want to know.
• Display a KWL chart on poster board or overhead transparency.  Record answers on it.  Revisit the KWL chart during the lesson as students find the answers to many of their questions and add them to the "Learned" column.
• Define "Peer Pressure"
• Do Brainstorming Activity.
• Then divide class into groups of four.
• Each group takes their brainstorming worksheet with them to their group.
• While working in small groups the students will discuss their answers and add any new ones that they may have.
• Each group will pick one situation and write it down on poster board.
• Bring all groups back together into one large group.
• Have each group post their poster board onto the wall.
• Each group will then take turns role-playing the situation that their group wrote down.
• The teacher will play the person applying the pressure in each situation while the group members act out the situation.
• Discuss the situations and what the students being pressured could do.
• Make a list of the answers.

• Briefly review previous days activities.
• Display vocabulary guide.
• Discuss the vocabulary guide with the class.
• Do "Peer Pressure" worksheet.
• Students will view the Powerpoint Presentation on "Ways of Coping With Peer Pressure."
• Students will view this site on Peer Pressure . Do questions 1-7.

• Modifications will be made based on those listed in the student's IEP (Individualized Educational Plan).
• Peer tutoring
• Modify assignments

• The role-play activity may be video taped and then presented to another class for a lesson on peer pressure.
• Students may create a poster on "Just Say No to Drugs" and display in the classroom.

     Students will be evaluated by using the following:

• Evaluated on participation in class discussion during lessons. (Class Discussion Rubric)
• Evaluated on participation in group work during Brainstorming Activity.  (Group Rubric)
