Learner outcomes: Upon completion of
this lesson, the student will be able to:
-
use the Internet to research pertinent topics
-
use library/ media resources to research pertinent
topics
-
create a web page, PowerPoint presentation, short
research paper, and/or participate in a debate
-
communicate knowledge about a topic which has
been researched( i.e.chimpanzees, habitat destruction, research ethics,
environmental issues, etc.)
-
select and limit a topic for research
-
plan and outline a research-based project
-
document sources used in a research-based project
Time Frame: Mimimum of four to five 90-minute
class periods
Materials:
-
reference material from library/media center
-
student disks (at least one per student)
-
index cards if bibliography and note cards are
required
-
style sheet (such as MLA) for documentation
-
paper for printing
-
student copies of directions for web page construction,
PowerPoint presentation, research paper, and /or debate
-
rubrics for evaluation of final product
Technology Tools/Courseware:
-
web page authoring software
-
Microsoft PowerPoint software
-
access to the Internet
-
computers with appropriate software and printing
capabilities
-
projection device
Teacher Notes:
-
Use caution when allowing students to fill out
guest books on the Internet.
-
The Internet sources listed were all complete,
working, and appropriate for classroom use as of the writing of this web
page. However, they change frequently. Teachers should preview any site
before making recommendations to students.
-
Teacher may direct students to selected sites
and/or allow wide searches.
-
At teacher discretion, students may work individually
or in groups of 2 - 3 on all activities.
-
Teacher may wish to establish intermediate deadlines
to encourage students' planning and to allow formative assessments.
-
Teacher should schedule library visit and use
of writing lab, if necessary
Procedures:
1. Explain to students
that they will now be independently researching topics related to issues
in the novel Eva with teacher monitoring and guidance. They are
to choose one of the following topics (to be refined and limited with the
teacher's help) for their research :
-
the brain--human or animal
-
organ transplants
-
chimpanzees/apes
-
habitat destruction
-
scientific research ethics
-
pertinent environmental issues (at the teacher's
discretion)
2. Tell students that upon
completion of their research, they will develop a finished product to communicate
what they have learned from their research. These products may be designated
by the teacher or selected by the students:
-
design a web page
-
create a 5-7 slide PowerPoint presentation (excluding
title and documentation page)
-
write a 1-3 page research paper
-
plan and participate in a debate
3. Spend time with students
in selecting, limiting, and refining topics. Establish expectations for
the final product and share student models, if possible and appropriate.
4. Give students at least
two days to research their topics in the computer lab and/or library. The
following list of possible sites or good search engines may be helpful
to students:
5. Allow ample time for students
to complete their Internet research; additionally, research in the library
may also be desired. An additional class period may be used for this purpose.
During research, students may need help in focusing their resources of
time, energy, and effort on the limited topic they have selected.
6. Distribute and explain
rubric for evaluation AFTER final product is selected by students or assigned
by teacher. (Teacher may limit choices to the degree necessary.) Re-emphasize
due date for finished products.
7. The students should
then begin to create their finished product. The following guidelines will
help the teacher manage these products:
WEB PAGES:
Using web authoring software
(i.e. Netscape Composer) students should create a web site that is both
accurate and esthetically pleasing for the visitor. The page should include
images, colors, backgrounds, and cited sources.

5. Allow time for students to present their
web pages and PowerPoint presentations to the class. The amount of time
needed will vary based on the choices made by the students.
Modifications:
Lessons will be modified according to the
individual student's IEP. Teachers may need to assist the student in making
the best decision concerning the choice of final project to best suit that
student's disability.
Enrichment Activities:
-
Power Point presentations and web pages can be
posted on the school web site.
Evaluation/Assessment:
-
Rubrics can be used for the final projects.
-
Teacher observation of student learning
throughout the lesson.
-
Meeting intermediate deadlines may contribute
to formative assessment.
